ERP

Cloud ERP vs On-Premise ERP: Key Differences

Compare access, maintenance, infrastructure, security responsibility and cost when choosing cloud or on-premise ERP.

IT and business managers comparing cloud and local ERP infrastructure

Cloud and on-premise describe where the ERP runs and how infrastructure responsibility is shared. Neither model is automatically better for every organisation.

Cloud ERP

Cloud ERP is accessed over the internet and generally shifts server operation, updates and availability responsibilities toward the service provider. It can simplify remote access and initial infrastructure needs.

On-premise ERP

On-premise ERP runs on infrastructure controlled by the organisation. It may provide greater direct control but also requires internal capability for servers, backups, security and updates.

Cost should be compared over time

Compare subscription, licensing, hardware, maintenance, backup, security, internal labour and upgrade costs across a realistic operating period.

Security is a shared design question

Cloud does not remove customer responsibility, and local installation does not guarantee security. Identity, access, backup, monitoring and recovery must be designed in both models.

Decision criteria

Consider internet dependency, remote work, regulatory needs, integration, internal IT capacity, recovery targets and the provider's service commitments.
